Before you order
When during a renovation should I order curtains or blinds?
Measure after the ceiling work, carpentry and painting are done, and ideally after the flooring is laid, because the finished floor level sets the drop. Anything measured before that is an estimate.
Talk to a supplier earlier than that, though. If you want a curtain recess, a pelmet, or backing above a false ceiling, those are carpentry decisions that have to happen while the contractor is still on site. A conversation at the drawing stage costs nothing and saves rework.
How do I measure my windows before asking for a quote?
For a rough figure, two numbers are enough per window. Measure the width of the opening or the wall you want covered, then the drop from where the track will sit down to the floor or the window sill.
Curtains normally extend past the opening on both sides so they stack clear of the glass, and the track usually sits above the window rather than on it, so the finished sizes will be larger than your window. Send the rough numbers for a ballpark, then let the site measurement produce the real figures. Our 2026 price guide shows what those widths translate to in cost.
Track or rod, and what is a pelmet?
A track is a discreet channel the curtain runs along, mounted to the ceiling or the wall. It carries weight well, handles wide spans, and is what S-fold curtains need to hang in even waves.
A rod is decorative and wall mounted, and suits eyelet and tab-top headings where you want the hardware visible.
A pelmet or curtain box is a recess or a built box that hides the track from view. It has to be planned with your carpenter, because it changes the ceiling detail above the window.
Can curtains be installed on a false ceiling?
Yes, with preparation. A loaded curtain track pulls downward, and plasterboard on its own will not hold it. The fix is a timber batten or plywood backing installed along the track line while the false ceiling is being built, or a curtain recess designed into the ceiling.
Tell us where your false ceiling runs during the consultation. If the ceiling is already closed up, we will look at wall mounting instead.
What if my window is not perfectly square?
Very few are. Made-to-measure work handles it by measuring the opening at several points rather than one. For an inside fit, the narrowest measurement governs. Where a recess is noticeably out of square, an outside mount that overlaps the wall hides the discrepancy better than a blind sitting inside the opening.
Measurement and installation day
Do I need to be home for the measurement and the installation?
For the measurement, yes, or someone who can make decisions. The consultant brings fabric samples, and colour and light are things you want to judge in your own room at the time of day you use it.
Installation is quicker and more mechanical. Someone needs to let the fitters in and check the result before they leave.
How much mess does installation make?
Drilling into concrete produces fine dust at each bracket point, so the area under the window gets covered and cleaned before the team leaves. Furniture close to the window is worth moving aside beforehand. Most single rooms are done within the hour, though wide spans, high ceilings and motorised systems take longer.

How do I clean curtains?
Check the label before anything else, because lined, interlined and blackout curtains are often not machine washable. The coating and the lining can separate or shrink at a different rate from the face fabric.
For routine care, vacuum with a brush attachment every few weeks and spot clean marks as they appear. For a full clean on lined curtains, use a professional service. Skip bleach entirely, and hang curtains back up while very slightly damp so the creases drop out under their own weight.
Do curtains get mouldy in Singapore’s humidity?
They can, where air does not move. The usual causes are a curtain pressed against a wall that gets condensation from an air-con unit, rain blowing in through an open window onto fabric that then stays shut, and furniture pushed up against the drop so nothing dries.
Keep a gap between the curtain and the wall, open the room up regularly, and dry the fabric out after rain gets to it. Musty spots are far easier to treat in the first week than after a month.
Will the fabric fade in the afternoon sun?
West-facing windows age fabric fastest, and UV is the reason. Lining helps directly, because it takes the sun on its own face and shields the decorative fabric behind it. If a window gets hard afternoon sun, say so at the fabric selection stage so the lining is specified for it rather than chosen on look alone.
For rooms where the heat itself is the issue, shading the outside of the glass with outdoor blinds does more than anything mounted indoors.
Which rooms should get blinds instead of curtains?
Kitchens and bathrooms, in most homes. Fabric near a hob absorbs oil from the air and does not release it, while aluminium and faux wood venetian blinds wipe clean. Our room-by-room guide covers the rest of the house.
Can I take my curtains with me when I move?
Sometimes. Width can often be adjusted and a drop can be shortened, so a set moving into a home with similar or smaller windows may be worth altering. Lengthening is harder, because the extra fabric has to come from somewhere and rarely matches after a few years of sun.
Tracks are usually a write-off. They are cut to length for one opening and the bracket positions will not line up in the new place. Bring us the measurements of both homes and we will tell you whether altering beats remaking.
Something has stopped working. Can it be repaired?
Usually, and it is worth asking before replacing anything. A single damaged vertical blind vane, a runner that has come off a track, a chain that has jumped its clutch, or a motor that has lost its limits are all component-level fixes rather than a new blind.
Send a photo and tell us roughly when it was installed. Work covered by the workmanship warranty is handled under that, and anything outside it we quote as a repair.
