Are Combi Blinds Worth It? Pros, Cons and Cost in Singapore

Combi blinds sell themselves on one trick. Slide the front layer a few centimetres and the window goes from open view to closed. Whether that trick is worth paying for depends on the room, the window and what you need the blind to do after dark.

How combi blinds actually work

A combi blind is one piece of fabric woven in alternating bands, sheer and opaque, joined into a loop that runs over a single roller. Line the opaque bands up with each other and the window closes. Offset them so the sheer bands overlap and you get filtered daylight and a view out. Every position between those two is available on the same chain.

The name changes by supplier. Re Design Deco lists them as combi blinds, they were sold in Singapore for years as rainbow blinds, and much of the market calls them zebra blinds. Same product.

Where combi blinds earn their place

Light control you can set anywhere in between

Most window coverings give you two or three useful positions. A curtain is open or drawn. A venetian tilts. A combi blind moves steplessly between open and shut, so an afternoon that starts bright and ends glaring gets handled by pulling the chain twice. In a living room that you use all day, that is the feature you notice.

Daytime privacy with the view intact

In the offset position the sheer bands screen the room from people at eye level outside while you can still see out. That is why so many HDB living rooms facing a common corridor or a facing block end up with them.

Glare on sun-facing windows

West-facing units take the worst of the afternoon sun, and closing the bands cuts the direct glare on screens and televisions. Fabric matters more than the mechanism here. A dim-out or tight weave stops noticeably more light and heat than an open sheer, so ask to hold the sample against a bright window before choosing.

A slim stack at the top of the window

Rolled up, the fabric sits in a cassette a few centimetres deep. In a bedroom where the wardrobe door swings close to the window, or a study with a desk pushed against the wall, that shallow stack is worth more than it sounds.

Where combi blinds fall short

They are not blackout blinds

This is the complaint we hear most, usually after someone has installed them in a bedroom. The opaque bands block light. The seams between bands do not, and neither do the gaps at the sides where the fabric sits narrower than the recess. Expect a dim room rather than a dark one.

If you sleep during the day, work night shifts or want a properly dark nursery, pair the combi blind with a night curtain, or use a blackout roller blind instead.

The privacy reverses at night

The sheer position works because it is brighter outside than in. Once your lights are on and it is dark outside, that flips, and the sheer bands show more of the room than people expect. Close the bands fully after dark.

Wide openings usually get split

Fabric weight and roller deflection limit how wide a single blind can be. A three metre balcony slider normally becomes two or three blinds side by side with a visible join between them, and each one operates on its own chain. Some people never notice the joins. Others find them irritating every day, so look at a wide installation before committing.

Fabric holds dust, and kitchens are harder

Vacuum with a brush head and spot clean marks as they appear. Near a hob it is a different story, because oil in the air works into the weave and does not vacuum out. For kitchens and wet areas, aluminium or faux wood venetian blinds wipe clean and last longer.

The chain

Standard operation is a looped chain at one side of the blind. In a home with young children the loop is the part to think about. Combi blinds sit between the other two. Take them when you adjust the window through the day and want to keep the view available, and when the window is a normal width.
